The leaf is not trying to be green.

A green canopy is not a personality. It is leftover light, a pair of pigments doing a job, and a reminder that looking is a method — not a vibe.

Chlorophyll, without the poster

Chlorophyll absorbs visible light most strongly in the blue-violet and the red. Relatively more green is reflected or passed through, so most leaves look green. That sentence is enough to change a walk: you are not touring a color story. You are standing next to an absorption spectrum that happens to be attached to a stem.

Carry a question instead of a camera preset. Which leaves are darker, thinner, waxier? Where does the light actually hit at this hour? Science, in this journal, starts as attention with a notebook — not as a lecture hall.

Blue that is not a dye

The blue of many Morpho butterflies is not a blue pigment sitting in the wing. Microscopic ridges and layers on the scales interfere with light. The color is structural: change the angle, change what you see. That is physics you can verify on a pinned specimen or, better, by watching a living insect tilt through sunflecks.

It is also a bridge into making. Once color is a structure, not a stain, a studio problem (how to keep a surface alive from more than one viewpoint) has a living precedent.

Networks, with the brakes on

Most land plants form partnerships with mycorrhizal fungi. Hyphae can move nutrients, water, and plant carbon. That much is well established. What does not follow is a forest that behaves like a kindly intranet, or “mother trees” as a general law.

Effects depend on species, season, and soil. Use can and under some conditions. The useful scientific habit is the same one that belongs outdoors: name the mechanism you actually have evidence for, then stop.
